Meta made the first AR headset for smartphones in 2013 and has now announced that its next VR headset is coming in October. The new headset is called Meta Cambria and may be called Quest Pro when it's released. Although, Meta declined to comment about their upcoming & expensive VR headgear when asked. The company didn’t confirm or deny the legitimacy of the Quest Pro name.
According to the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed the launch party of Project Cambria, aka Quest Pro, sometime this year. He said while speaking to Joe Rogan at the very beginning of the podcast, “For the next device that’s coming out in October, there are a few big features.”
Meta will launch a high-end Quest Pro that will definitely complement its previous series, Quest 2, which costs around $299. The new headset is expected to have a better field of view than the current headsets, a higher resolution display, and more accurate hand tracking. It also has a 3D sound system with four speakers and a microphone on the front of the device.
Zuckerberg added, “The one you’re talking about, basically social presence, and the ability to now have eye contact in virtual reality, have your face be tracked so that way your avatar is not just like this still thing, but if you smile or if you frown or if you pout—or whatever your expression is.”
Project Cambria or Quest Pro will be the next high-end standalone VR headgear, allowing people to do augmented reality stuff like social experiencing and playing immersive games while staying in their own cozy living room. According to Zuckerberg, through this new headset, social interaction will be on another level with advanced eye & facial expression tracking.
Also, the price will be significantly higher than $800. There are still tons of information coming in the upcoming week about Cambria. Some leaked specifications of Quest Pro are: 2,160 x 2,160 MiniLED Backlit LCD Panels (2), Custom Pancake Lenses (2), 16MP Color Camera for Color Passthrough, Eye + Face Tracking (IR Camera-based), Qualcomm XR2+ Gen 1 SoC, 12GB LPDDR5 RAM, 256GB SSD, WiFi 6E Support, ~5000 mAh battery.
A significant difference between Quest 2 & Quest pro is the- color cameras. People will experience virtual surroundings with a 16 MP color camera and realistic passthrough capabilities. Also, depth sensors will help to place digital objects into physical space accurately. If developed correctly, Quest Pro can produce a futuristic AR experience. Point to be noted that Project Cambria will include new sensor technology like facial expression tracking & eye tracking, which can introduce new opportunities to animate avatars in the virtual world. Moreover, Project Cambria looks like an expensive, advanced AR/VR hybrid headset.
